History of the Kings of Britain 10 - The Death of Hengist
The tenth reading from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain covers the time period between Vortigern and the return of Uther Pendragon.
Aurelius Ambrius and Uther Pendragon sail back from Gaul with the intention of making war upon Vortigern and taking back the kingdom for themselves. They burn down Vortigern’s tower with him in it and then do battle with the Saxons, eventually capturing Hengist and at the Bishop’s instruction, they chop his head off. They give him the burial he would have wanted in the pagan style in a barrow and then set about creating a monument for the Britons killed by the Saxons at the peace conference.
