History of the Kings of Britain 12 - Arthur is Crowned King

Part 12 of the series narrated from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s ‘History of the Kings of Britain’ sees Uther Pendragon poisoned by the treacherous Saxons and Arthur finally making his appearance as King. The country by this time was in a terrible state after being ravaged by the Saxons. The Churches has been destroyed by them and the Archbishop gives a rousing speech exhorting his countrymen to lay down their lives for their people and their fatherland and finally drive the Saxons from the land.

While the German barbarians were devastating the country in the south, the Picts, Scots and Irish were attacking from the north. After a series of battles Arthur and his men eventually manage to expel the Saxons and after being moved to tears by the patriotism of the Scottish clergy, Arthur lets them live and even grants them lands to live on. He then subdues Ireland and the country finally settles down to 12 years of peace. There is a gap in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle at this point in time, which does lend credence to these Welsh records of Arthur.
